I've had The Malibu Dress pdf pattern for quite a while but never got around to making it - I think it's the binding - I always think it's going to be harder than it really is. I really like the shape of it though - it flares out from the bust so is very flattering to wear.

The Malibu Dress is straight out of your favorite 90s movie! Featuring thin binded straps and two length options, mini and full length, wear over a basic tee or stand alone! This basics design is great for layering with our other Grunge looks!

Suggested fabric for The Malibu Dress is any knit with 50% stretch and adequate drape. I used some soft jersey fabric purchased from www.poundfabrics.co.uk which was lovely to work with and very soft against the skin. The Malibu Dress is available in sizes Tween - 5X which is a full bust range of 28.5" - 55.5". The pdf is layered and comes in sizes A4, US Letter, A0 and Projector versions.

The Malibu Dress is drafted for a height of 5'6" so, as instructed, I took 0.5" out of the bodice at the line given on the pattern. The instructions on how to do this are clearly explained. I also graded the pattern - I wanted the shoulders and underarms to measure at a 14 but I graded out to a 16 over the full bust. This is the bonus of making your own clothes! If I bought this strappy style in ready-to-wear I would have to purchase a larger size to fit over my bust but then the straps would be too far apart and would slip off my shoulders.

I did consider using fold over elastic (FOE) for the binding and straps but I was worried that the finished Malibu Dress would look too much like a nightie (*note to self - The Malibu Dress would make the perfect nightie!). In the end I cut strips of fabric as instructed and even though the process takes a bit longer than using FOE I think the finished result is really neat.

Making The Malibu from start to finish is something you could complete in a couple of hours. The binding can appear daunting but the instructions are very clear. I didn't hem my Malibu so it was even quicker. I think this pattern would be great for making Summer Tops too! I wore my Rave Shirt under my Malibu and my Teen Spirit over - both George + Ginger patterns.
