I made a muslin of The Little Black Bra first and found the instructions really easy to follow. Its important to measure yourself accurately - you choose which pattern size to cut depending on your upper bust measurement (under the arms) and then you make a series of other measurements to determine your sewing cup size. This size is different to ready-to-wear so its really important to measure yourself and not to rely on the size you would buy in a store.
Construction of The Little Black Bra is fairly straight forward. You have two cup pieces, two straps, a back piece and a band. Lining pieces include the cups and back. You don't need much fabric at all so this pattern is a great scrap buster. I chose the slim band option and added elastic to the straps (the elastic is inside the strap, not exposed). After sewing and pressing the straps I remeasured them and they had stretched by 1/2 inch so I trimmed accordingly.
I was really happy with the fit of my muslin - I lined it in the same fabric - and it is super comfortable to wear. I immediately made a second version, this time using a more light-weight fabric and lining with power mesh. I chose not to add foam inserts so it only offers soft support but thats ideal for me for summer wear. You could easily make The Little Black Bra in an athletic knit for more support.
George & Ginger Patterns have also made a youtube video demonstrating The Little Black Bra construction in detail with tips on how to add foam cups, how to lower the centre front and how to lower the armpit area. At the end of the youtube video there is a CODE to get The Little Black Bra for FREE!
Final Thoughts: This bra pattern is a great scrap buster and is easy to make and wear. If you choose the Crop Top Band option you have a neat little top that could be made to match shorts or skirts. I like the idea of adding a skirt to the 'Bra' to make a cute night dress.
