I made a South Shore Romper along with a Dress Hack in the summer and love the fit and ease of wear. With an upcoming birthday I thought I'd make another.

Recommended fabric is 50% four-way stretch knit. I already had some Lurex Textured Stretch Knit, purchased last year, from Minerva which I thought would be perfect. The South Shore Romper is available in sizes XXS - 5XL which is a bust range of 29" - 63". The pdf is layered and comes in A4, US Letter, A0 and Projector versions.

The South Shore Romper is drafted for a side waist of 8" and a height of 5'4" therefore I only needed to shorten the side waist by 1". The shorten/lengthen lines are clearly marked on the front and back pattern pieces so it's an easy adjustment to make.

The South Shore Romper comes with the following sleeve options:

  • tank

  • short

  • 3/4

  • long

  • bell sleeve.

I knew I wanted to have long sleeves on my South Shore Romper Dress Hack but fancied something 'puffy' as I thought this would suit the fabric and make my dress more 'evening' appropriate. The Bell Sleeve wasn't quite what I wanted but I thought I'd try to make it fuller and also add a large cuff. To do this I simply drew a line from the arm syce down to the sleeve end on the pattern piece. Because I was adding a cuff I shortened the sleeve pattern piece by 2.5" too. I did this on the upper section of the sleeve pattern piece because I didn't want to lose any volume from the bottom.

How to create a Full Sleeve Pdf Pattern

I made my cuffs by cutting two rectangles approximately 8" x 8". I folded them in half longways and sewed the side seam, turned them out and folded up to create a cuff. I gathered the sleeve end and attached the cuff. There was a lot of gathered fabric to sew to the cuff so this was a bit fiddly.

I made a belt shorter than the pattern recommends because I found the original a bit long - my finished belt measures 60" x 2" and ties neatly around the waist.

With my first South Shore Romper Dress Hack I added a Circle Skirt but this time I decided to add a less full Half Circle Skirt. I used the Skirt from The Lounge Gown which is a FREE pdf pattern by George + Ginger Patterns. I didn't add pockets as I felt that they wouldn't complement this fabric/skirt.

I'm really pleased with my finished South Shore Romper Dress Hack and it was really comfortable to wear on a night out. The knitted fabric has a pleasant weight and drapes nicely without clinging. It's great to find a versatile bodice pattern that I can pretty much add any 'bottom' to.
